Nobody thinks they have a dog: they think they have that dog. That is where the present is won.

This is the niche where the costly mistake is being generic. A shirt saying you love dogs says nothing about you; one saying dachshund, or golden retriever, or german shepherd, says everything, and whoever gets it recognises themselves before finishing the sentence. Between the two versions of the same idea, the second sells in another league.

The second thing that matters is the role. Dog mom and dog dad are not the same line and are not bought at the same moment: the first gets given between friends, the second is nearly always bought by a partner. If you are choosing for someone else, start there.
